A comprehensive overview of edible landscapes—complete with more than 300 full-color photos and illustrations
Designing Urban Agriculture is about the intersection of ecology, design, and community. Showcasing projects and designers from around the world who are forging new paths to the sustainable city through urban agriculture landscapes, it creates a dialogue on the ways to invite food back into the city and pave a path to healthier communities and environments.
This full-color guide begins with a foundation of ecological principles and the idea that the food shed is part of a city's urban systems network. It outlines a design process based on systems thinking and developed for a lifecycle or regenerative-based approach. It also presents strategies, tools, and guidelines that enable informed decisions on planning, designing, budgeting, constructing, maintaining, marketing, and increasing the sustainability of this re-invented cityscape. Case studies demonstrate the environmental, economic, and social value of these landscapes and reveal paths to a greener and healthier urban environment.
This unique and indispensable guide:
- Details how to plan, design, fund, construct, and leverage the sustainability aspects of the edible landscape typology
- Covers over a dozen typologies including community gardens, urban farms, edible estates, green roofs and vertical walls, edible school yards, seed to table, food landscapes within parks, plazas, streetscapes and green infrastructure systems and more
- Explains how to design regenerative edible landscapes that benefit both community and ecology and explores the connections between food, policy, and planning that promote viable food shed systems for more resilient communities
- Examines the integration of management, maintenance, and operations issues
- Reveals how to create a business model enterprise that addresses a lifecycle approach

Agriculture + Urban Planning textbook
By Michael A. Duvernois
I hesitated a bit before describing the book as a textbook in the title. Am not sure if that was the intent, but it definitely has that feeling to it. The illustrations are high quality, there are checklists, photos to parallel the text, and generally high production values. You need to contrast that with most urban agriculture books which come from the opposite end of formality, "a hippie's guide to turning a vacant lot into a garden." Here the gardens are parts of the planned and approved urban landscaping. And it's not a bad thing! The subtitle says "complete' guide to planning, design, construction, maintenance, and management of edible landscapes, and I'd say that this book plus a gardening book would be complete.
Here in this volume, the focus is on hooking the garden into the existing cityscape and into the local population, as well as designing it well for production, and the book offers a lot of example projects almost all of them are US projects as well. If you want to do a community project with the local government in your town or city, this would be the reference guide. If you want to plant potatoes in the median of your boulevard or corn in a vacant lot two doors down from you, not so much.

Bringing nature back to urban spaces
By J. Green
I guess I was expecting something like those Ortho guidebooks you see in the nurseries, with all kinds of helpful how-to advice for the home gardener. Instead, this is an in-depth and detailed textbook for designing and creating urban gardens on a much larger scale than the average home gardener. It covers a lot of the fundamentals of *why* community-based gardens should be built in poor urban areas such as reversing the "food desert" trends to educating disadvantaged youth on the relationships between communities and nature to reducing the effects of climate change. It also covers things like attracting sponsors and fund-raising as well as how to best address the needs of those being served. But while the focus is generally on poorer urban areas, some examples of more upscale projects are also highlighted. Unfortunately, not all the projects spotlighted in the book are completed or functioning - many are still only projects on paper waiting for a sponsor or public funding.
I assume this is meant to be a textbook, and as such I think it works very well. The prevalance of color photos and graphics enlivens the topic as well as illustrating the end goal. It may also be useful to community organizers and activists. The projects profiled in the book range from planned communities and expensive roof-top gardens over gymnasiums to a very ambitious (and beautiful!) school garden and an urban parking strip (even the parking strip garden was designed by an architect). Although I was looking for enlightened ideas for my (sub)urban garden, it's a very nice book for those contemplating more ambitious projects.

Forward Thinking Book but Not For Your Average Homeowner
By Soccerfan
I received this book for free to review from the Amazon Vine program. I am very interested in urban homesteading so I was really excited to get this book, but unfortunately it has very few pages dedicated to your average suburban homeowner wanting to replace her lawn. The author is a landscape architect who does more large scale projects rather than individual homes.
If you are in charge the design and planning of the grounds for a school, business or park this would be a great book to get for ideas. It is a well researched book, filled with full color pictures of examples of roof top gardens, vacant lands turned into parks, organic gardens at schools, restaurants that grow their own food and much more. I give it an A+ for research, content and unique ideas.
