Passion is on the cards for two reckless rogues as K. J. Charles ups the ante in her Society of Gentlemen series with a sizzling eBook short story.
The youngest son and the blackest sheep in his family, Lord Gabriel Ashleigh never imagined he could sink so low. Though he’s a notoriously bad gambler, he takes on the formidable but strangely alluring Francis Webster, only to lose everything: all his money, the lovely estate he inherited from his aunt, and any hope of future happiness. So it’s a shock when Webster summons him to a private game for a chance to win back his possessions. The stake? If he fails, Ash must surrender his body.
Francis has been waiting years for this moment. At Eton, Ash’s elder brother harassed him relentlessly. Now, consumed by lust and rage, Francis is only too happy to exploit Ash’s foolish indiscretions. But as Francis strips the magnificently built youth—first of his family assets, then his clothes—he begins to wonder whether he’s been plotting revenge . . . or exquisite seduction.

Disappointment
By JS
I kinda feel a bit hook-winked out of money on this one. It's only 3 markers on my Kindle for length, and the actual story only took up 2 of those. The story ended at 65%. The rest was excerpts. So this didn't really feel like 50 pages at all. When the last scene ended, I thought -- wait, that can't be it? I also didn't find the sex very hot for the build-up. I think this was a waste of good characters and I felt a bit cheated on content. If you haven't read the books in the series, I don't think this works very well; it's not a stand-alone. And even having read the others, I still don't really feel as if I knew these characters at all. I was disappointed since I loved the books in this series.

I'm ruined for all other Regency romances!
By Jen Valencia
The Ruin of Gabriel Ashleigh is the prequel novella in the Society of Gentlemen series from author K.J. Charles and was originally published as part of the multi-authored Another Place in Time series. Both Gabriel Ashleigh and Francis Webster were introduced in the first book, A Fashionable Indulgence, which I absolutely adored, and because their presence there was markedly memorable, finally knowing how these two got together was a joy. Their main connection is Ash's older brother, who, like Francis, is six years older than Ash, but with Francis's relationship with said brother adversarial at best, Ash and Francis weren't exactly bosom buddies and Ash himself fell prey to putting his foot in his mouth while intoxicated.
This novella may not detail when Francis and Ash first met or every encounter they had thereafter, but what it does, and it does it rather well, is it gives readers pertinent information, enough that we know how enough of their history to realize that what happens to them is an undeniable inevitability. Novellas are difficult to pull off, mainly because of the limits on length, but K.J. Charles proves you can indeed create a story and leave a reader like me more than satisfied and squeeing in delight like the that fangirl I am. The Society of Gentlemen series has ruined me for all other Regency series, whether M/M or otherwise, and The Ruin of Gabriel Ashleigh gives you a delicious taste of just how addictive a series it is. Five-plus stars! ♥

Fun short story/MM Regency Romance
By Wendy Clements
A very fun short read about two characters introduced in A Fashionable Indulgence, Gabriel Ashleigh and Francis Webster. While it doesn't delve into the issues AFI does, it gives the back story of Gabriel and Francis, which is nice to have. It's not necessary to have read AFI-- it helps some, but I think reading this first would add insight when reading AFI.
I love the attention paid to detail about Regency period--the men were _all_ about fashion, and KJ Charles knows what she's talking about. Some might think that there's too much detail, but that's really what the period was about--an excess on behalf of the gentry that exacerbated the divide between the landed gentlemen and the working class (hm, sound familiar?). The detail is all important, because that's what they lived and breathed. Cuts to one's wardrobe were taken seriously. It's like Mean Girls, only it's Mean Guys. And I think it's fascinating that the men were just as obsessed about their clothes as women were always portrayed to be. It's a wonderful insight, and very artfully done. A Fashionable Indulgence shows this in greater depth, so if you've tried this first, and liked it, you'll love AFI!
