This is a long read and I am not quite finished. Madison took copious notes during the convention, never missing even a single day. He devised a method of shorthand and at the end of each day transcribed his shorthand while the days events were fresh on his mind. He believed, correctly, that posterity would want to know how the discussions transpired. The pace of the convention, the diligence of its attendees, the concerns, the solutions considered are vicariously experienced through Madison's notes. If you're a student of the Constitution and our Republic, worth the read.

Links Don't Work on Kindle

The content, of course, deserves five stars.

The Kindle formatting is strange. On my two Kindles (keyboard and paperwhite), the table of contents is not on the "Go To" list. You have to go to the cover and then go one page forward to the table of contents link--which works. When you get to the table of contents each of the convention days is underlined as though linked, but the links don't work. Clicking on any of them brings you to the opening page.

However, the table of contents and the links all work with the PC Kindle software. So, there is something strange going on with the formatting. The PC can read it, but my Kindles can't.

This means that on the Kindle you can only get through the 805 pages 1 page at a time--unless you want to guess by location numbers. You can also read through it page by page and bookmark each day thus creating your own links.

All in all, this version needs just a little work to be a useful digitally.

great textbook and geekbook!

For anyone who wants a great read about recovering metals- this is a good book! I would love to see more practical applications for recovery/recycle in a urban environment- but heck- the book is applicable where and how you use it!
A word of CAUTION though- if you are thinking about using these reagents and some of the reactions in a home or residentially zoned area- have a waste tank and DO NOT USE the water/sewage system! Some of the chemicals can be toxic in watersheds, and they can trace certain impurities/additives through local pumping stations to your area.
-Overall- this is an excellent book for teaching reactions and refining- in a college or advanced high school mind. I only gave it 4 out of 5 because I was a little dissapointed in the delivery of the information- but it is a STRONG 4 and a half stars!

The non-chemist precious metal chemistry bible

It took me two years to obtain this book for it changed editor's houses several times in the near past. Yet, it was worth every efforts! The second edition is more thorough in it's common topics than the first edition, and contains new material. This book is worth every penny you'll spend on it and I bet that if you use it in the lab, you'll regret not being able to afford a second copy for safekeeping in your library. Whether you're a small time refining jeweller or a commercial gold refining operation, the book will not only give you applied recipes and procedures but also, stimulates your imagination with contemporary methods new ideas and an original conceptual approach to precious metal chemistry. It's a treasure trove of ideas and practical information for the non-chemist or the week-end basement-lab chemist who wants to learn the basics or the commercial operator who want to get new ideas on how to improve his bottom line.
Although you could follow the recipes of this book blindly, it requires an elementary base in chemistry to fully appreciate Ammen's impressive knowledge. For teaching yourself the bases of chemistry, I recommend "Chemistry: The Central Science" by Brown, Bursten and Lemay as the perfect companion. It is by far the greatest ground-level chemistry book I've ever seen; it will take you painlessly, and with captivating style, from the level of complete ignoramus to a level where you can be fully operational in basic chemistry. I wish all my basic science textbook had been that good. A comprehension of differential calculus is desirable but high school maths will more than suffice for the majority of the content, and certainly for most of the content related to precious metals chemistry. If you are not a chemist but had chemistry classes in high school or college, I suggest you throw away your old chemistry books and buy the pair ! Not Great If You Want Your Kids to Be Kind

My goddaughter got this at school to read for an alternative reading book. I have not read the others in the series but I must be missing something. Personally do not think Halloween = Mishief night = TPing house = kids right?! Lying to parents, no repercussions, making fun of a girl left in her underwear being made fun of due to her costume being stepped on and name calling is funny. Actually, if children did part of these things at school they would be written up for bullying and made to join a class on learning to treat others with respect . There's a reference to "the nude kid", "yanking your chain"... I understand these are all supposed to be funny but I am left wondering what happened to funny books with characters who are not left to be disrespectful of people and property with.

a good read for your kids

My daughter just loves the My Weird School series. The books come out about every month so it gives her some thing to look forward to. The books are cheap so for your dollar you really can't beat it. The reading level isn't too high so she gets through them fast and it gives her confidence in her reading abilities. The main character A.J. is in second grade and hates school (something that every kid can relate to).

I read the other reviews...not sure what I am missing. We just started reading this to our five year old...we had to stop. The main character is disrespectful to adults and lies to his parents. Not sure how that would warrant 4 or 5 stars? I only gave it a one because it HAD to be rated with at least one star...I guess it goes for the illustrator of the cover. We always talk through those sorts of things as we read...but when it is the main character that is just hitting below the belt! We are returning it...and searching for books that provide additional support for our children...positive role models are always a plus.
