About the Author

Eric Jensen is a former teacher and current member of the Society for Neuroscience and New York Academy of Sciences. He has taught at all levels, from elementary through university level and is currently completing his PhD in human development. In 1981, Jensen cofounded SuperCamp, the nation’s first and largest brain-compatible learning program, now with over 50,000 graduates. He has since written Teaching with the Brain in Mind, Brain-Based Learning, Deeper Learning, Arts with the Brain in Mind, Enriching the Brain, and 21 other books on learning and the brain. A leader in the brain-based movement, Jensen has made over 45 visits to neuroscience labs and interacts with countless neuroscientists. He was the founder of the Learning Brain EXPO and has trained educators and trainers for 25 years worldwide in this field. Get off the dead horse of "old school" education

To those seeking an outline of what education needs to practice so "no child is left behind" this book is a starting point about how people learn. The flow of the book is easy to follow and considers the research findings of how the brain learns in stages of life. Unlike those who consider brain research a "fad", I know from application of the knowledge in this book, the influential changes do produce positive results for students. In the world of "accountability" the tools of Brain Based teaching will allow students and teachers a solution in "leveling the field" for the students from less fortunate environments, which politicians are clueless about in regards the obstacles of "survivalists of poverty". I highly reccommend this book to those wishing to "get off the dead horse" and provide a productive environment for education in the 21st century.

Useless for deep understanding, not good for beginners either

The book describes few concepts. A beginner would expect to see a bigger picture rather than a seemingly random set of methods or models. A professional would look for detailed explanation of concepts.The book provides neither. Descriptions are shallow, formulas contain errors, pseudo code is often wrong. Some description would better be replaced with concise and clear formulas, some formulas require explanations. The book needs a proof editing. However, the bigger problem is how the author presents the material.
I'd recommend a much better book to start with: "Neural Networks and Deep Learning" by Michael Nielsen.

No-buy for a beginner and not useful for a professional

The book is more like a quick compilation of a college student's note. Concepts are presented in a relatively isolated manner; connections between concepts are, for the large part, missing. Furthermore, if the materials presented are rather shallow like in this book, readers will expect to see a strong emphasis on, or hands on exercises of, practical applications. But this book doesn't seem to help much in that regard either, despite what the book claims. The book does give introduction to a bunch of models, which can be useful for a beginner. But at least this edition I wouldn't suggest any one to buy because of poor editing. For example, the pseudo code fragments listed in the book are often wrong, or different than what is described by the text. References to formulas, etc need some proof reading, too.

A few minutes before midnight on April 14, 1912, the “unsinkable” RMS Titanic, on her maiden voyage to New York, struck an iceberg. Less than three hours later she lay at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. While the world has remained fascinated by the tragedy, the most amazing drama of those fateful hours was not played out aboard the doomed liner. It took place on the decks of two other ships, one fifty-eight miles distant from the sinking Titanic, the other barely ten miles away. The masters of the steamships Carpathia and Californian, Captain Arthur Rostron and Captain Stanley Lord, were informed within minutes of each other that their vessels had picked up the distress signals of a sinking ship. Their actions in the hours and days that followed would become the stuff of legend, as one would choose to take his ship into dangerous waters to answer the call for help, while the other would decide that the hazard to himself and his command was too great to risk responding.

If you're a Titanic buff,

don't miss Mr. Butler's books. I collect every book I can find on the subject, and this author not only is very readable and interesting (I'm plowing through this one as fast as the Carpathia rushing to pick up survivors) but he always manages to add new facts and ideas that weren't in other books. I find it really intruiging that he considers Captain Stanley Lord of the Californian, who didn't bother to come to the aid of the sinking Titanic, to be a sociopath. I haven't seen this theory anywhere else, but it is certainly plausible and would go a long way to explain Lord's behavior in the situation. In fact, Mr. Butler reveals more about Lord's character than I have previously read. In 1912 it's likely that the concept of sociopathy was not fully known. Lord is compared with Captain Rostron of the Carpathia, who was the hero of the hour, and whose career really took off after the Titanic rescue. I also would like to recommend Mr. Butler's earlier book, Unsinkable. I hope he will write more about the Titanic, maybe about Captain Edward Smith or Bruce Ismay. My only complaint, which is not the author's fault, is that this book went to press full of typos and printing errors. This is the second new book I've read in a few weeks that is this sloppy. What is the matter with the publishers today? I'm an editor, I notice these things.

Well Done!

While Capt. Rostron's gallant and courageous behaviour is beyond criticism, Captain Lord's activities, or rather inactivities, that fateful night the Titanic hit an iceberg, have been a stone of contention ever since. Many have sought to excuse Lord's not coming to the aid of the foundering leviathan by pointing at inconsistencies in chart positions, relative distances, other ships that may or may not have lain between Lord's Californian and the Titanic, and many books have been written to defend him, despite the overwhelming weight of evidence against him. In this book, D.A. Butler gathers all the threads, puts them on the loom and, strand after strand, inexorably weaves them into the carpet of Lord's guilt. But then, Lord's guilt had already been painfully obvious since the first book by a non-survivor appeared, "A Night to Remember" by Walter Lord, an account which mostly contented itself with describing what happened that night. Butler carefully looks at all the evidence at hand and draws the inescapable conclusion, refutes the arguments Captain Lord's defenders have been brandishing to prove his innocence and applaud his prudence and, more importantly, dissects and indicts the defender's lopsided and devious ways of neglecting certain unwelcome evidence. Butler also finds an answer to the mystery as to why Lord acted the way he did during the night, explains his erratic behaviour after the disaster and why he issued so many conflicting statements during the subsequent inquiries (which I will not give away here, of course). And last but not least, Butler compares the relative merits of the American and the British inquiries into the disaster and, surprisingly for an American, gives the British one more credit than many others have done (such as Wynn Craig Wade, who revelled in calling it a whitewash on almost every page).
I couldn't put the book down and was sorry to have finished it, which, considering the fact that the outcome of the disaster is not unknown, is quite a feat. Well done!

"A ship is not going to fire rockets at sea for nothing."

The sinking of the RMS Titanic in April, 1912, has captured the public's imagination for more than a century. In numerous articles, books, and films, many have speculated about how and why this luxurious liner went down so quickly, taking over fifteen hundred lives with her. In "The Other Side of the Night," maritime historian Daniel Allen Butler compares two captains who were aware of the Titanic's distress, were in a position to help, but reacted in opposite ways. Arthur Rostron of the Carpathia did not hesitate to marshal his crewmen and sail as quickly as possible to aid the foundering Titanic. Thanks to his quick response, hundreds were rescued who might otherwise have frozen to death and/or drowned. Stanley Lord, the skipper of the Californian, on the other hand, turned a blind eye to what was happening, and his intimidated subordinates dared not oppose him.

Butler, in lucid prose largely free of jargon, educates us about the perils of the North Atlantic. Dense fog, towering waves driven by heavy winds, rain and sleet, and of course, ice have long posed serious threats to oceangoing vessels. However, when Marconi introduced wireless telegraphy, communication at sea became "a practical proposition." Marconi believed that ships should have the ability to send messages to one another in case of emergency. Why, on that fateful night when the Titanic hit an iceberg, did only one ship hasten to reach her?

"The Other Side of the Night" is a fascinating, informative, and well-researched book that answers this and other provocative questions. Its detailed and riveting narrative illuminates the events surrounding the loss of the Titanic and offers a compelling account of the hearings held in the United States and England in the wake of the disaster. Investigators concluded that Rostron was "a conscientious officer," justifiably respected for his bravery, competence, and decisiveness. He was the right man in the right place at the right time. His quick thinking, amazing seamanship, and compassion propelled him to immediate and effective action.

On the other hand, Stanley Lord did nothing to assist the Titanic's passengers and crew. Daniel Allen Butler demonstrates that greed, arrogance, ineptitude, and negligence all played a part in this now legendary catastrophe. There is plenty of blame to go around; Lord is just one of many individuals who committed egregious errors in judgment. For example, the Titanic's Captain, Edward J. Smith, "took only minimal precautions" to avoid hitting an iceberg. In addition, "there had been no clear-cut procedure for handling wireless messages on the bridge," so "most of the warnings the Titanic had received on April 14 had gone unnoticed." Making a bad situation worse, there were too few lifeboats to hold every passenger and crewman. This enlightening work of non-fiction is enhanced by its excellent black and white photographs, riveting epilogue, appendices, author's note, and useful index.

I am deducting one star because the author applies a label to Stanley Lord: sociopath. Such speculation is not helpful; it has no place in a book that purports to be factual. Lord may have been misguided, lazy, cowardly, and/or overly-cautious. We will never know for sure what his motives were, and it is irresponsible to diagnose a man posthumously.

About the Author
Anthony F. Molland is Emeritus Professor of Ship Design at the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom. For many years, Professor Molland has extensively researched and published papers on ship design and ship hydrodynamics including propellers and ship resistance components, ship rudders and control surfaces. He also acts as a consultant to industry in these subject areas and has gained international recognition through presentations at conferences and membership of committees of the International Towing Tank Conference (ITTC). Professor Molland is the co-author of Marine Rudders and Control Surfaces (2007) and editor of Maritime Engineering Reference Book (2008). Stephen R. Turnock is Professor of Maritime Fluid Dynamics at the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom. Professor Turnock lectures on many subjects, including ship resistance and propulsion, powercraft performance, marine renewable energy and applications of CFD. His research encompasses both experimental and theoretical work on energy efficiency of shipping, performance sport, underwater systems and renewable energy devices, together with the application of CFD for the design of propulsion systems and control surfaces. He acts as a consultant to industry in these subject areas, and as a member of the committees of the International Towing Tank Conference (ITTC) and International Ship and Offshore Structures Congress (ISSC). Professor Turnock is the co-author of Marine Rudders and Control Surfaces (2007). Dominic A. Hudson is Senior Lecturer in Ship Science at the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom. Dr Hudson lectures on ship resistance and propulsion, powercraft performance and design, recreational and high speed craft and ship design. His research interests are in all areas of ship hydrodynamics, including experimental and theoretical work on ship resistance components, seakeeping and manoeuvring, together with ship design for minimum energy consumption. The authors have collected and organized virtually all of the public domain data regarding ship resistance and propulsion of marine surface vessels into one significant reference book. It is a reference library in one volume. It will be of value to students and practicing designers who have limited access to a technical reference sources regarding surface ships and small craft.

Appropriate Review: Herobrine goes to school

Hi, I have a book blog called TheBestBookBlog(Ever) and I recently have started informing parents if certain book are okay for their kids.

Launguage: Four Stars (Just the usual "Brief Mild Language" thing.)

Easy-To-Read: Three Stars (A little hard, but by the time of eight or seven, your kid will reign triumphntly.)

Violence: Four And A Half Stars (There was this one time when Herobrine "pushed" Brett, the school bully.)

I would say 7-8 and up.

Attention herobrine author...

Adores by my 12yr old gamer middle schooler!! Wish they made more deals on bundles since they're quite a few to this collection...but, easy to read for those who may struggle. So, would be brilliant for author to hit on some of the "struggles" kids have in middle school..Sire, they're are 1-2 in collection that graze the surface.. Seems great way to reach the jr.high crowd with some of the pre high school dilemas kids face these day...giving us a great, "you're not alone and self help ideas if your in a situation" as they all seem to need this!

First of all I do wanna point out.... This is one funny book and do look forward for a second book in the future after all marvelous writing no errors maybe one I gotta double check though I like this author he makes great books for kids and teens which is great.

Is your child a bully or getting bullied? read this book money is so worth it you will learn about herobrine and how he is different and gets bullied typical middle or elementary kids but remember don't do this all you will do is get in trouble ok all right. Great book keep it coming

Plain and Predicatable, but still worth reading

If I hadn't read other books by Belva Plain, I would give this book 5 stars. It was a good book, but she has done so much better in books like Evergreen and Legacy of Silence. This was a fast read (I did it in 3 days, along with working 8 hours each day and studying) and I was wrapt until the middle of the book, when I realized exactly what was going to happen. I finished the book, with hopes that I was incorrect. I was disappointed with the transparent climax, but overall this is worthwhile, especially if you haven't read any of Plain's greater works or can forget that you have.

An engaging, breathtaking story

I had never even heard of Belva Plain when I saw this novel for sale at our library, but I thought the synopsis was intriguing and boy was I right.

Where to begin? The characters were wonderful--full of real life emotion and actions and often complex. The writing was also well done--admittedly the story started off a bit slow for me, but that is because the real drama of the story was yet to come. Once things really got dicey, it was tough to put this book down (though sadly I had to a few times with everything going on for the holiday weekend). In some ways, the story is part mystery, though mainly it is about a woman, Hyacinth, who is coping with a nasty divorce, limited time with her own children, and an inability to really trust people and sometimes even be around them. She lives in daily fear that her ex-husband will expose a secret that she can hardly believe even happened. Eventually another man comes into her life, but as much as she loves him, her inability to trust him and disclose what has happened in her past ultimately comes between them. Of course, there is her ex-husband's partner, Arnie, who we know is in love with her throughout the entire story, though she doesn't feel that she can reciprocate those feelings. Do you see how the story quickly becomes complicated and heart-wrenching at times? Oh, and as for that ex-husband, Gerald... boy do you love to hate him, or at least I did. A more condescending, unreasonable, unfaithful jerk you'll be hard-pressed to find, though he tries so hard to cover it all up with his "charm."

When the truth about that tragic secret was finally revealed, I have to admit I was pretty surprised. I suppose I ought to have seen it coming, but I think that in many ways I am as naive as our protagonist, Hyacinth. Plain really did a brilliant job weaving an incredible story that at times seems almost unbelievable, though in reality stranger things have happened. It is rewarding to see Hyacinth's life start to turn around, though her road is certainly bumpy as she tries to move on from what has happened to her.
