This is a good book that touches on a lot of topics related to a company. Its interested to learn how we each give off signals in the work place and how they may affect performance. It talks about email versus face to face communication, leadership and overall emotional intelligence. Easy read for best understanding.

NOT HELPFULL FROM A STUDENTS PERSPECTIVE

This book is so poorly written that if the professor relies solely on the book, the student will have no clue what on earth is going on, this is what I am experiencing now. The author could have done a better job dumbing it down so that a layman could understand it. One would need an intro class for this book alone before he/she would actually be able to understand some of the theories, due mainly to authors pretentiousness.

Diego and Frida

This is an extraordinary book. To start the translation is the best French to Spanish translation I have ever read. It is, I am sure, as good as the original French version. Y-The translator certainly read this book several times to understand well what the author wrote. The drama the author writes comes through alive and impressively as if one was present conversing with the persons in the book. A drama that forces one to live their lives along as one reads the text. Very human.

Who would have thought that a book about English would be so entertaining? Certainly not this grammar-allergic reviewer, but The Mother Tongue pulls it off admirably. Bill Bryson--a zealot--is the right man for the job. Who else could rhapsodize about "the colorless murmur of the schwa" with a straight face? It is his unflagging enthusiasm, seeping from between every sentence, that carries the book.

Bryson displays an encyclopedic knowledge of his topic, and this inevitably encourages a light tone; the more you know about a subject, the more absurd it becomes. No jokes are necessary, the facts do well enough by themselves, and Bryson supplies tens per page. As well as tossing off gems of fractured English (from a Japanese eraser: "This product will self-destruct in Mother Earth."), Bryson frequently takes time to compare the idiosyncratic tongue with other languages. Not only does this give a laugh (one word: Welsh), and always shed considerable light, it also makes the reader feel fortunate to speak English.

A multitude of errors

This book is certainly amusing. It's very enjoyable for a novice to read.

But, as many others have pointed out, every page is just error after factual error. Bryson simply does not understand how languages work, and whatever his sources are are frequently wrong. My favorite mistake is when he claims that in Finnish, there is only one swear word, ravintolassa, meaning "in the restaurant" (page 214). Now, ravintolassa DOES mean "in the restaurant," but that's ALL it means. Finnish has plenty of native swear words (saatana, perkele, vittu, jumalauta, and more), and I still cannot imagine how Bryson came to the conclusion that, not only did it have only one, but that it was the word for "in the restaurant." It's truly mind-boggling.

Among my other favorite errors are when he says that "Estimates of the number of languages in the world usually fix on a figure of about 2,700" (page 37; all estimates I've ever seen generally give between 5,000 and 6,000). Or when he completely misunderstands the concept of case affixes when discussing Finnish (page 35; he seems to think that the various words created are utterly unanalyzable to the speakers. By analogy, then, English speakers would need to learn the plural word "cats" separately from the singular "cat," rather than simply extending their knowledge of the plural suffix -s to the word "cat." Bryson fails to make the rather important distinction between "word" and "root").

He also buys the extremely controversial arguments of people like Merritt Ruhlen and presents them as complete fact ("Recent studies of cognates...have found possible links between some of those must unlikely language parteners: for instance, between Basque and Na-Dene...and between Finnish and Eskimo-Aleut. No one has come up with a remotely plausible explanation of how a language spoken only in a remote corner of the Pyrenees could have come to influence Indian languages of the New World, but the links between many cognates are too numerous to explain in terms of simple coincidence" -- page 24). There hardly exists a serious linguist in the world who would agree with that statement.

And of course there is the famous "Eskimo" Words for Snow Myth, which results in large part from a total misunderstanding of the nature of polysynthetic languages (page 14).

Unfortunately, many of the errors Bryson makes are much harder to catch, in that they involve concepts (such as his apparent conviction that English is somehow unique among languages in its expressiveness and form...he also ironically says on page 17 that "most books on English imply in one way or another that our language is superior to all others"), rather than factual claims, since incorrect facts are easier to refute.

Throughout the book, Bryson repeatedly makes these types of inexcusable factual and conceptual errors, and as a result paints an inaccurate and deceptive picture of languages and linguistics in general. For this reason, I take issue with the reviewers who say that what matters is that the book is entertaining negates its errors. On the contrary, the entire point of the book is to tell the story of the English language, and Bryson, as a good writer who knows how to inject good humor into his work, makes it funny. But a the true purpose remains to educate people, and it fails miserably in this respect, and as a result, it fails as a whole. Adding humor cannot make a bad book into a good one.

VERY POOR AUDIO QUALITY!

While I almost always enjoy the content and anecdotal style of Bill Bryson's books, the Bxxxxstxne Axdio audiobook version was quite disappointing due to it's mediocre audio quality. Frankly, I have (very venerable) audiobooks on audiocassettes that sound better. The tracks on these CDs simply lack dynamic range and "crispness" as if the narrator was speaking through a cardboard tube, and the quality of the sound is, after all, the whole point of buying a CD product instead of downloading some low bitrate MP3 version. Perhaps this is due in part to the use of cheap CDs - the CDs are - quite seriously - translucent. I can actually read text on my computer monitor THROUGH the CDs! I've never encountered THAT before!
So, high marks for the author (and narrator), but very low marks for Bxxxxstxne Axdio.

Not a travel book (except in a way it is a journey through the English language).
Easy to read but still challenging and fascinating.
I love this book and if you are in any way interested in how the English language developed (with some laughs along the way) then you will be too.

In Republic vs Autocracy Professor Andrzej Kaminski analyzes a pivotal period in the struggle between the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and Russia for control of Ukraine and, ultimately, all of Eastern Europe. By 1697 the Commonwealth had lost control of East-Bank Ukraine and Kiev to Russia, and had seen the election of a Saxon king to the Polish Crown. Peter I had firmly established his rule and undertaken the Azov campaigns. The Cossack Hetmanate was increasingly dominated by the Russian autocracy; the Treaty of Hadiach with the Commonwealth had failed. Russia was growing stronger in the international sphere. Poland-Lithuania had begun a decline accompanied by the ever-increasing absorption of its territories by its adversaries. Ukraine was split between two spheres of influence, with the Russian sphere growing larger after each of Russia's confrontations with the Commonwealth. Concentrating on diplomatic relationships, the struggle for control over Ukraine, and the response to the Ottoman threat, Kaminski shows how political structures and forces within the Commonwealth and Russia contributed to the outcome of their rivalry. The focus on diplomatic relations centers on the residencies that Russia and the Commonwealth had in each other's capitals, seen through the detailed records of the respective departments and chancelleries responsible for foreign affairs. Kaminski shows through these records how the two powers perceived each other and how they achieved their objectives. Republic vs Autocracy also offers ground-breaking analyses of the Solomon Affair and Russia's involvement in the election of August II to the Polish Crown, as well as new perspectives on the personal andpolitical development of Tsar Peter I and Hetman Ivan Mazepa's relationship with Moscow and Warsaw. A must read for anyone interested in Polish/Russian history

English language scholarship on Polish or Russian history tends to fly past the diplomatic and cultural exchanges of the late 17th century; preferring instead to focus on domestic reforms or foreign military victories. This book, fortunately, doesn't, instead spending time detailing the political and bureaucratic systems of each state, personalities, and intrigues during the reign of Jan Sobieski. The chapter on the unusual Solomon Affair is the best treatment in English of which I'm aware. Kaminski also advances a novel (and very plausible) theory to explain the bizarre behavior of just about everyone during the affair, though I'm not entirely convinced by it. Also interesting are the allusions to popular political philosophers of the period and their influence on the ordering of the Polish government.
I would recommend this title not only to students of Russian and East European history, but to anyone studying European states in the period after the Wars of Religion.

Professor Kaminski's book is an excellent, original, based on primary research comparison of Polisha nd Russian diplomatic services. It challenges many prevalant stereotypes and brings new light on the approach of these two rivals to each other at the end of the 17th century. Brilliant!!!

Among of my favorite sweet things are Banana Custard Tart which I changed to Strawberry Custard Tart (this is strawberry season) and the Raspberry Frozen Yogurt. yum.
All recipes are clear and include ingredients and instruction for each recipe. Very important information concerning the key nutrients such as calories, fat content, fiber and carb. levels etc. are all provided. That is a great help.

About the Author
Cornelia Nuzum was born Cornelia Marahall in Greenbrier County, West Virginia on 19th August 1856. She married Staats Nuzum (1858-1904) who was of Irish descent. In 1911, some years after the death of her husband, she became involved in the Home of Peace in Oakland, California which was run by Carrie Judd Montgomery. She also assisted in weekly divine healing meetings with Mrs. Montgomery. She became respected as a writer of articles on faith and healing. From this time through to the 1940s, she was a regular contributor to Mrs Montgomery's monthly Triumphs of Faith journal. Mrs Nuzum became known for her devotional writings, many which were published as tracts under the name, Mrs. C. Nuzum. A number were collected into her only book publication, The Life of Faith, which was released by Gospel Publishing House in 1928. The Life of Faith has become a classic and has remained in print for almost 80 years. Mrs. Nuzum was associated with the Assembly of God fellowship from 1914. She was greatly blessed in a ministry of healing which is reflected in many of her tracts. Her particular emphasis was always faith and the blood of Jesus. Her writings also appeared in the Pentecostal Evangel.

THIS SHOULD BE REQUIRED READING FOR EVERY CHRISTIAN

This book has more meat than books ten times it's size. This book should be required reading for every Christian. Mrs. Nuzum lived on faith and never doubted the power of the Lord to deliver her from every attack of the enemy. This is one of the few books that I own that I will not loan out. It needs to be re-read on a regular basis.

This is a classic on how to live by faith in Christ. The author grounds her material in Scripture and simply and clearly tells the reader how to apply the principles of faith. You don't need a theology degree to understand this book. It is sensible, practical, and very inspirational. It would be a great resource for pastors, Sunday School teachers, and evangelists.

Hooman Darabi is a Senior Technical Director and Fellow of Broadcom Corporation, California, and an Adjunct Professor at the University of California, Los Angeles. He is an IEEE Solid State Circuits Society distinguished lecturer and his research interests include analog and RF IC design for wireless communications.

Practical knowledge for modern RF circuits and systems design

Walking down the halls of a large RFIC design company for the last decade, I notice the same few text books on the desks of most of the designers, especially recent graduates. These are excellent academic texts, but were written when CMOS RFIC design was more of a research concept. Now that we are well into the 2nd decade of the CMOS renaissance, there has been a lot of real world design experience gained.
Dr. Darabi is someone whose designs have been manufactured into CMOS RFIC's for hundreds of millions of wireless devices currently in use around the world today. His insights and advice are greatly sought out amongst peers and colleagues.
His book starts out by reviewing the fundamental equations of the electromagnetic pioneers Gauss, Faraday, Kirchhoff, Maxwell etc. With this reaffirmed foundation, the reader is led to individual chapters on modulation, filters, noise and distortion. Next come chapters dedicated to each block in the RF signal chain: LNA's, Mixers, LO's, all the way to PA's. Concluding with an RX TX transceiver architecture overview, including current packaging and production concerns.
The reader can follow the book as a whole, or skip to a specific chapter and dig in to the loads of equations, diagrams, problem solving questions and answers, as well as the many references to other books and research papers. This book is an excellent tool for someone researching design concepts, or examining their current RFIC circuits and systems designs.
Did you know flicker noise is considered Gaussian, but is Laurentzian? is it possible to design a low noise, high linearity receiver, but with a mixer as 'first' block in chain? what are some good design techniques to help prevent signal coupling within today's complex SoC's? these and many other questions are answered.

Excellent Book to Understand RF Circuit Design

I think this book is in one the up to dated and comprehensive ones in its realm. It can be useful for students and RF engineers to understand how real world transceivers and circuits work. Although, at first glance, it may seem hard to real but I suggest trying to study one topic you have read known and hive knowledge about it, and then you will find out this book gives you more insight about it and tries to give you new intuitive and engineering view to it so that you can make your knowledge deeper and apply it in real circuit design.

For example, most RF books talked about system design. However, I think this is the only new one that addresses topics like reciprocal mixing and Harmonic mixing in detail. I am sure you will find new information/methods that are practical and will help you to design/understand feasible circuits.

The book starts to build fundamentals like circuit theory, random process and etc. and then step by step goes to circuit and transceiver design. The author is well known in RFIC realm as he tried to combine his academic and industrial knowledge here to share it with you.

Finally, I suggest having it in your library because I am sure you will enjoy its reading and find new ideas!

I really like the way the author explains and approaches the concepts

I'm really liking this book. It begins with fundamentals and covers a decent amount of theory but is also practical, with intuitive explanations of things. I really like the way the author explains and approaches the concepts. Problem sets can be challenging but that's what makes it fun, right !?!? Definitely a good reference text to have in the collection.
