I purchased and read Eric Capehart's book, titled The Miracle Maker. Although I've known about him and his mentorship efforts for several years, the book shed light on aspects of his journey that I was unfamiliar with. I live my life by the mantra 'to whom much is given, much is required' and I believe mentorship is a way to fulfill what is required of us. Eric's book speaks to his answering of the call to mentorship. Our community needs more of us to find, connect, and commit in regard to being a mentor for others.

This is a great read for anyone who is considering a mentor/mentee relashionship. The author reveals the gift that mentorship can be for both parties. I was really impressed by the way the author describes how someone we have never met can be a mentor.

Good stuff

This is a good book, no doubt, but I did find it to be almost like a subset of "Drummer's Cookbook". It has lots of variations of the basic 4/4 beat. It waits until the second half of the book to move the snare off of 2/4, where Drummer's Cookbook does that almost right away. For someone just starting, this book may be less intimidating, but besides that, I'd recommend going straight to DC and bypassing this one.

This posthumous collection of 18 short stories by the author of The Night of the Hunter attests to the talent of this enriching, humane and under-esteemed writer. Grubb's stories are in the gothic manner, brimming with murder, madness and destructive passion, yet they are admirably controlled, and exhibit a rigorous morality mixed with an imagination undaunted by the dark chambers of the human heart. The title story is a ghoulish tale involving the disappearance of an orphan whose fantasy world becomes more real than her cruel life with her aunt and grandfather. Revenge is a prominent motif in "Return of Verge Likens," where the son of a man killed by a local hoodlum spends years working on an elaborate plan of vengeance, and in "Green Thumb," in which a dead man whose body was hidden by his killer wife leads authorities to the spot where he was buried. Orphans, bachelors, spinsters, cranks, psychotics and confidence men populate Grubb's remote West Virginia landscapes. Each story is introduced by an ironic comment from the author's notebooks, and the best of them are gems that will last.

We Need More!

Davis Grubb wrote roughly a dozen novels, all of which were good and at least three that bordered on great (The Night Of The Hunter, Fool's Parade & Ancient Lights). His three collections of short stories are all worth buying. This one may be the best. Very good stories with little scraps from his notebooks as a sort of rubic. This is a writer of such skill that there should be a complete collected stories available on him. Some publisher out there take note! And readers? BUY THIS BOOK!

Unjustly forgotton author, terrific short story collection

These stories remind me a little of Ray Bradbury's stories -- the same dark playfulness, and the twists at the end. Set in West Virginia, with a real feeling for place and time. Davis Grubb, author of NIGHT OF THE HUNTER (also teriffic), deserves to be rediscovered.
