PREFACE TO THE THIRD EDITION

Fundamentals of Process Control Theory was written in 1981 as a prototype for ISA's Independent Learning Module publication series, and it rapidly became the best-selling book ever published by ISA. With the publication of the second edition in 1991, the strong popular acceptance continued and the book has approached "classic" status. This is especially satisfying for an author.

This textbook is designed for independent self-study. It is for the practicing engineer, first-line supervisor, or senior technician. College, university, and technical school students will also find the material appropriate. Fundamentals of Process Control Theory is designed to teach the basic principles or process automation and demonstrate how these principles are applied in modern industrial practice. Some knowledge of mathematics is necessary, of course, but I have made efforts to prevent the mathematics from being a barrier to study by those without strong math skills. The material is designed as an introductory or first-level course. A quick review into the specific topics covered.

This book is intended to be both theoretical and practical--that is, to show the basic concepts of process control theory and how these concepts are used in daily practice. This is a book about fundamentals, concepts, ideas, principles, theory, and behavior. It is not about hardware and software. To some extent, however, we all know that hardware and software will dictate what "theory" can be used and useful. Thus, the actual implementation of process control theory changes as hardware and software change, and this march of progress has made a third edition necessary. I hope this new edition proves useful to you, the student.

An effort has been made to make this presentation consistent with the various standards and practices used throughout the various worlds of process control and instrumentation. I have attempted to ensure that no significant inconsistency exists with the standards relating to terminology, especially Process Instrumentation Terminology, ANSI/ISA-S51.1-1979 (R 1993), and that is reflected in both the text and the Glossary given in Appendix B. Some minor inconsistencies may be noted wiht ANSI/ISA-S5.1-1984 (Reaffirmed 1992) Instrumentation Symbols and Identification (referenced and excerpted in Appendix A), in some of the figures of the presentation, but in no case have I found this to lead to confusion for students.

My special thanks goes to all who made the first and second editions of this book so successful. It is my hope that the revisions for the third edition, many of which were suggested by you, will make it even better.

This book is designed as a self-study guide for both beginners and experienced practitioner who want to learn more about Process Control.

A true road map to the world of process control. The book contains 17 step-by-step self study units. It also comes with a CD that includes a digital version of the full textbook.

I am an Industrial Practitioner of Process Control. I have been working for more than 16 years as an Instrumentation, Automation, and Process Safety and Control Engineer for the Oil & Gas Industry. I have made extensive use of this book to prepare tutorial and training material for technician and operators.

If you are looking for a more in-depth treatment of process control topics, but still oriented towards practical industrial applications, you might want to consider Bela Liptak's Instruments Engineer's Handbook Volume 2 - Process Control and Optimization. I own both books and they have proven to be a very effective combination to solve day to day problems in my job.

Not For The Beginner

The instrument shop where I work selected this book for apprentice instrument techs. It is a disaster! None of the techs understand calculus or differential equations. Most of the theory and terminology are way over their heads. The book is long on verbage but short on real meat for the beginners. Quite honestly, I don't see any use in having this book on my shelf. I recommend the 4th edition of the Instrumentation book by Franklyn Kirk. It also comes with a very good workbook for a few bucks extra.

Having had the pleasure of meeting and interacting with Dr. Senger on multiple occasions, the man who literally wrote the book on theriogenology, I'm happy to have this book again. I bought it in undergrad, and before I knew my interest in vet school would be therio, stupidly sold it back. But hey, I got the newest edition, so I can't complain.

Quality textbook without the bookstore price.

My wife is an animal science major and one of her animal reproduction classes required this textbook. The text and pictures are in high resolution and appear on what seems to be a high grade gloss stock paper. While paperback, if taken care of, this book should remain the best quality and should be able to be used for years to come.

Documentaries such as Nanook of the North, The Sorrow and the Pity, and Victory at Sea are among the classics of film history. More recently, documentaries such as Fahrenheit 9/11, Hoop Dreams, and When We Were Kings have also garnered acclaim. The power of these films is such that a number of them have become part of our collective memory: think of the images of the 1960s in Gimme Shelter and Woodstock: Three Days of Peace and Music or the stark depictions of absolute evil in Night and Fog and Triumph of the Will. The documentary tradition is nearly as old as the film industry itself and is represented in most of the countries around the world.

In this set, readers will find articles discussing the documentary scene in the Czech Republic, the former Yugoslavia, the Near and Middle East, Southeast Asia, and nearly everywhere else. A number of filmmakers better known for other kinds of cinematic work are also included because of their documentary work, for example, Jean-Luc Godard, John Huston, and Agnes Varda. With an advisory board made up of an international group of scholars and a list of contributors to match, these volumes offer a comprehensive look at the subjects: films, filmmakers, and filmmaking traditions around the world are examined in articles ranging in length from 500 words to several thousand. Many of the signed entries are accompanied by suggestions for further reading, selected film lists, and brief biographies. In addition to the alphabetically arranged and thoroughly cross-referenced entries, there are a thematic list of entries and an exhaustive index. Black-and-white still photographs from a variety of documentary films accent the cavalcade of entries.

Stanley Kubrick once explained film genres: "Confront a man in his office with a nuclear alarm, and you have a documentary. If the news reaches him in his living room, you have a drama. Make Vol. 37 - Homegrown Drones!

Make Volume 37 features homegrown drones as the focus topic for the issue. Drones for personal use can range from inexpensive hobby devices to sophisticated flying machines suitable for aerial photography. One's involvement with drones is only limited by your passion level and pocketbook. This issue features articles on construction, flying, and regulations of unmanned aerial vehicles. After reading this issue draw your own conclusions to the future of UAVs. Will drones one day replace the local delivery van? Time will tell.

Make is one of my favorite publications. The focus article provides in depth coverage of a specific topic while the additional articles add a variety of subject matter that keeps things fresh and interesting. As a woodworker I enjoyed the "Salt and Pepper Well" project that uses the drill press as a lathe for making a small part. The "License Plate Guitar" project is bound to be a favorite of the musically inclined maker.
The Skill Builder article, "Finding Your Way with GPS" had me looking for the GPS receiver I have stashed in my office. Happy to report it's been found and I look forward to using it soon.

My favorite mode of delivery for Make is the PDF version. This allows me to size the print comfortably and most importantly I can follow the included hyperlinks to additional information. In my opinion this is what makes the Internet useful and enjoyable. I would recommend Make to anyone that likes pick up a tool and tinker. Should you prefer print or digital delivery, Make is a must read for people who like to make, modify, or experiment.

Upholds the DK Name

I own multiple DK books and multiple volumes about the history of fashion. This book follows DK's tradition of gorgeous, informative coffee table books, as well as offering new information to someone with an amateur interest in historical dress. (For some context, here are some of the fashion books I already own: Taschen's Fashion, John Peacock's The Chronicle of Western Costume, and John Peacock's 20th Century Fashion.)

The chapters focus on eras, and within those, the individual page spreads focus on specific topics (suits, sportswear, silhouettes, etc.) with multiple pictures of outfits on each page in a timeline format. DK uses this format to trace different trends, so sometimes there are several spreads that cover the same decade. The book differs from Taschen's and Peacock's books in that it has much more explanatory text and a greater variety of pictures: full costume photos, detail photos, period illustrations from advertisements and fashion plates, and examples from fine art.

This tome covers men's and women's fashion from King Tut to Kate Middleton, and mostly focuses on Western costume. If you're an expert on the history of fashion, this may end up being little more than a book of pretty pictures for you (and pretty pictures they are!). If you have a hobbyist's interest, then this book has a lot to offer. Either way this book definitely lays out information in a way that cannot be found anywhere else.

Pretty Pics, But Not Much Else

Okay; I am a professor of costume history, so I admit I came to this book with something of a finicky eye. That understood, I was a bit shocked at how sort of 'lazy' (for wont of a better word) the writing was here. For example, Medieval hennins (those high headdresses) were not described as such, but instead, simply pointed out as 'tall headdresses'. 'Gigot sleeves' of the 1830s are described as 'puffed sleeves', and only one Egyptian headdress is given its correct name (the 'nemis'); everything else is just described as 'a headdress' (when each headdress had its own name and symbolism).

Further to this, there is absolutely no analysis as to the 'why' of anything. WHY did Neo-Classicism happen? WHY did silhouette change between the 1400s and 1500s. Basically, it's just a book with pictures of clothing that is grouped together intelligently, yet seems to exhibit no real research or academic knowledge of Costume History.

HOWEVER...

Out of all of the Costume History books I own (and I own them all, lemme tell ya!) this is by far away the most gorgeous in terms of presentation; costumes appear clearly and are arranged in a manner that makes sense to the eye. And it really does cover (almost) everything, although I was surprised that it only kicks off Ancient Egypt, ignoring Sumeria, Galettian culture of the Paleolithic Era (and all that shell beading), etc.

I use it as a required text for the images, as it really does give students an instant 'visual read' on, say, what men wore in the 1770s, etc. Yet this isn't an academic text. It offers no real 'discussion' as to any of the costume periods in hand; instead, what we are left with is pretty light cocktail banter.

A lovely coffee table book and general overview of the subject, but not really worth of Smithsonian publications in terms of academic or historical depth.

Somewhat Disappointingly Uneven

When I saw the book at A local bookstore while shopping with some friends, Igrabbed it immediately, and purchased it without question, as DK books are lavishly illustrated with clear color photos as a general rule.

The illustrations are worth the purchase price alone, as they are large enough for one to extrapolate from them the methods to make the garment yourself, and as an invaluable guide to the proper colors to use, as well as fabric choices to use.
It is a very handy guide to making one's own "garb" for renfaires, renactments, etc.

However, I DO have one problem with the book. It is decidedly uneven as to what periods are covered, with the weight of it(half)being devoted to the last two hundred years or so, and weighted towards the 20th century. Lopsided is one word to describe it. For a more balanced coverage, you still can't beat 20,000 years of Fashion, or the recent History of World Fashion.

But if you are craving color photos as a vital guide to making your own clothing-
this book would make an excellent addition to one's fashion history library.

The price is right, and worth grabbing asap.
